1. FINDING A BESPOKE SOLUTION

A bespoke solution is often the best answer for challenging spots in the home – whether the furniture is freestanding or fitted. Be aware that all these solutions are not the same. Make sure you are making the most of your space by working with a company that doesn’t have predefined door or frame sizes. Some companies need to use fillers with fitted furniture to hide the spaces they can’t work with. Others like James Adcock Furniture & Kitchens will create a unique piece specifically for the space, maximising its usefulness with furniture built to last.

2. THE DESIGN PROCESS

Some companies offer a free design service, where the salesperson visiting your home uses pre-ordained door and frame sizes.  Consider whether you’d prefer to pay a charge for a designer to spend time and thought over your specific needs.  Ask the company you choose about their design process as some of them – like James Adcock Furniture & Kitchens – will refund the fee charged against the cost of the furniture when you order. Customers are welcome to visit us in our showrooms to receive design ideas and an approximate quote prior to a site visit.

3. ASK TO SEE EXAMPLES

Always ask to see examples of the company’s work. Take a look at the gallery on our website and Instagram for pictures of our work. Wardrobes in eaves, working around beams and wonky walls in period homes, all of these things are possible with skilled craftsmen and bespoke fitted solutions.

4. USEFUL STORAGE

Do you have enough storage space? Can you maximise the use of this space by working with a designer to create a bespoke storage solution designed to perfectly fit that space? This may be a hall cupboard to store coats and shoes or a fitted bookcase, maybe a wardrobe…the options for fitted furniture are endless.

5. CHOOSING THE ROOM

Do you want to utilise more space in your kitchen? Would a larder or breakfast cupboard make all the difference to the heart of your home, or, is it an awkward corner that you think a breakfast bar or even a mobile island could be of use. Explore our current range of best selling kitchens here.

6. HIDING YOUR TREASURES

Elsewhere you may be crying out for a solution to provide somewhere to put the TV – including hiding it if you want to – as well as somewhere to put treasured possessions. Alcoves either side of a fireplace again can benefit from a bespoke solution.

7. DON’T FORGET ABOUT LIGHTING

Awkward spaces can be dark too, so do make sure you speak to your designer about integrated lighting that will help you better utilise the space. Downlights work well to bring focused light to an area that recedes from the wall. Cooking also requires more concentrated lighting, so a combination of bright downlights and recess lighting in cabinets and above a stovetop is useful.
